A Classroom Created by the Children
In the previous issue, I introduced how our teachers look closely at each individual child.
This time, I would like to introduce some of the classroom-building practices that have grown from that approach.
During the first semester, a wide variety of initiatives took place in each class.
For example, some classes regularly set aside time for children themselves to discuss events that had occurred in the class or problems they were facing.
Rather than deciding "who was at fault," they discussed questions such as, "Why did this happen?" and "What can we do so that everyone can enjoy being together?" Instead of the teacher providing the answer, the children think for themselves about their own classroom.
Some classes also had children write about their feelings and daily experiences in notebooks and exchange messages with their teachers. These notebooks often revealed thoughts and feelings that might not come out in ordinary conversation. New ways of connecting with the children began when teachers received and acknowledged those feelings.
Other classes worked on activities in which children shared not only what they were good at, but also things they found difficult and things they wanted others to understand about them.
Through these activities, children began to change the way they saw their classmates, saying things such as, "I thought they were doing it on purpose, but they weren't," or "I didn't know they felt that way."
There were many other approaches as well: finding and sharing the good qualities of classmates, expressing how they were feeling at that moment, and using class newsletters to share children's experiences with everyone. Each teacher continued to make adjustments according to the children in front of them.
Although the methods differed, the teachers shared the same hopes:
"We want children to know more about their friends."
"We want to create a classroom where everyone feels safe expressing their feelings."
What moved me most about these practices was not simply the teachers' ideas, but the way the children themselves began to change.
They became able to say, "I don't understand."
They reached out to classmates they had rarely spoken with before.
They discovered sides of their friends they had not known and changed the way they viewed them.
When they saw a friend having difficulty, they began to ask, "Is there something we can do?"
This kind of growth cannot be expressed in numbers like test scores. However, I believe it is one of the most important things children learn at school.
A classroom is not something created by the teacher alone.
Children learn about their friends, talk about themselves, and sometimes disagree with one another, while continuing to think about the question, "What kind of classroom do we want to create?"
Through that continuing process, I believe the children themselves build their classroom.

Poder decir «no entiendo».
