“When I Change, Children Also Change”
Over the past two issues, I have introduced some of the classroom-building practices from the first semester at our school. One report in particular stayed with me.
One teacher told the children something like this:
Rather than trying to change another person so that they become the way you want them to be and fit your own preferences, broaden your own capacity to accept others as they are, without forcing them to change. That, too, is one of the great values of coming to school.
These words gave me much to think about.
There are many different children at school.
Some enjoy talking, while others prefer spending time quietly. Some can do things quickly, while others need more time. Some enjoy being with a large group, while others value time alone.
We can easily find ourselves expecting children to “be able to do things in the same way as everyone else.” However, I do not believe that building relationships means making someone become the same as everyone else.
We ask ourselves, “Why does that child act that way?”
We come to realize, “So that is what they were feeling.”
We accept, “They are different from me, and that is okay.”
Rather than having just one person adjust to everyone around them, each of us gradually broadens our own capacity to accept others. I believe this is at the heart of the relationship-building that our school values.
In the practices of the first semester, it was not only the children who were changing. The teachers themselves were changing as well.
Some teachers realized that they had been thinking, “I have to make this child do this.”
Some reflected on how they had focused only on a child’s behavior.
Some changed the way they spoke to children rather than trying to change the children themselves.
Some reconsidered their approach and thought, “I should listen more carefully to what the child is feeling.”
As teachers changed in these ways, gradual changes also began to appear in the children.
That is why our school values the words, “When I change, children also change.”
This does not mean, “If teachers change, they can make children change exactly as they want.” Rather, it is a question we ask ourselves: by broadening the way we see children and changing the way we interact with them, can we create an environment where children feel safe to be themselves?
School is not only a place to learn subjects such as Japanese and mathematics. It is also a place where children meet people who are different from themselves, learn about their feelings and perspectives, and sometimes struggle as they learn how to live together.
Children and teachers learn together and change together.
That is the kind of school we hope to be.

Niños y docentes aprenden juntos y cambian juntos.

Crianças e professores aprendem juntos e mudam juntos.
